Qianmen and what to visit there

Qianmen-1.jpg

Qianmen 前门 is a district right to the south from Tian'anmen Square. Qianmen Street originates from the gate of Qianmen which was the south gate of the inner city of Beijing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, founded in 1419 and served as a defensive system.

The length of the Qianmen Gates is 850 meters and width is 25 meters.

This district is not always visited by foreign travelers since most of them head to The Forbidden City and Tian’anmen Square - the most visited sights in Chinese capital, usually not knowing that just right behind the southern side of the Square there is a district worth visiting not less than Forbidden City!

Qianmen Street stretching to the south of Beijing is surrounded by complexes of houses in European and traditional Chinese styles of 20-30s of the XX century. Now district is busy with numerous shops, restaurants and cafes, though having that special “old” charm.
